Biodiesel | Learn How To Make Your Own Biodiesel From Vegetable Oil Video

Watch In HD!

Graydon Blair from Utah Biodiesel Supply shows you how to make a quick mini-batch of Biodiesel from new oil using only methanol and potassium hydroxide.

The batch is made from new Canola oil but any organic oil will work.

The recipe:
500 mL Canola Oil
100 mL Methanol
3.5 grams Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)

Materials Needed:
1 Liter New Canola Oil
1 Yellow Bottle of HEET
3.5 Grams Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
1 Measuring Cup To Handle Up To 500 mL (Oil)
1 Measuring Beaker up to 100 mL (Methanol)
1 Small scale accurate to 0.5 grams
1 Measuring cup for scale
1 Pan & small burner to heat oil
1 Thermometer that reads up to 200 deg. F
1 Pouring Funnel
1 Large Wide Mouth Mason Jar
1 Pair of safety gloves

Instructions:
A) Add 500 mL to pan & begin to heat
B) Measure out 100 mL Methanol
C) Measure out 3.5 Grams KOH
D) Add KOH to Methanol & allow to dissolve
E) Heat oil to 130 deg. F (no hotter than 140 deg F Max)
F) Pour heated oil into mason jar
G) Pour methanol into oil
H) Screw on Mason jar lid tight
I) Shake vigorously for at least 5 minutes
J) Allow to settle for approx 24 hours
K) Remove Glycerin
L) Biodiesel is ready to show off!

I like it when someone who is 14 years old is already into this stuff and making an effort to learn the chemical wonders and other knowledgeable stuff, unlike many others in the similar age group wasting their time replying to Justin Bieber's Twitter or catching up on their latest dirt about a celebrity. Congrats? to you, you'll go far in life :)

sorry ( I am only 14) could you put a chemical equation? somewhere so I can have a better understandi ng of what is going on?

lye produces a new ...
lye produces a new chemical called methalhydroxide. 1 thing to notice in the mixing process is as the chemicals react they produce a emense amount of heat. A easy way of mixing in all steps is to purchase? a cheap blender. 5 minutes should be good for the methanol and KOH solution, 15 minutes for the oil and methalhydroxide. When your mix is all done and settled you will want to check both the PH and the specific gravity of it. with proper research you can get the exact #'s.

using heet is a ...
using heet is a more expensive way of doing a minibatch or in the test phase also called a titration. If you live in a area that has auto garages who specialize in race cars you can find out from them who is a good direct source for? methanol. In those cases though one is typically buying at minimum a 55G drum of methanol. 1 drum can supply enough methanol for at least 400 gallons of biodiesle. another thing not mentioned is the methanol combined with the KOH more commonly called

Too much work, I'll stick with WVO lol?

How is there no ...
How is there no advantage? If you have time you can make fuel and the more you make the faster the process and more you have. Diesel cars get excellent fuel economy, you might only need to fuel up once a week if not less if driven decently no hypermilling. You can also make your own E100 which is a bit more involved but can be done for affordable prices and no you're not relying on the "system" as you put it. You can buy a fuel buddy from Pep Boys for like $60.?

If it? takes 10 minutes for KOH to dissolve in the methyl alcohol how long does it take NaOH to do the same?

It's? involved ...
It's? involved mainly because we're chemically altering the oil into something thinner. Not simply diluting it. The chemical process is much more involved than just diluting with acetone. There's much more in depth info on our website. Click the link in the video description & then visit our "How Biodiesel Is Made" page, which explains the details.

Why is this so ...
Why is this so involved? People just seem to throw some acetone in and call it a day. You are using 20% methanol, seem indepth and expensive if you are making 50 litres of the stuff (? you would need 10 litrs of methanol, or 10 bottle of HEET) Please explain

You can stick it in ...
You can stick it in a 2 liter pop bottle, turn it upside down and? slowly drain it off or put it into any container that you can flip upside down and drain from the bottom. Works great!

How? do you remove ...
How? do you remove the glycerin???

You can make ...
You can make biodiesel yourself for around $0.80/gal. Not only that, you don't fully rely on external sources for your materials. Once you have all the hardware (beakers, etc.) you don't need to? repurchase most of the supplies. You can grow and/or recycle your own vegetable oils (sunflower and soybean growing are super easy & cheap), make your own lye (from wood ash),& use rain water as the soft water you need. There is no advantage to making your own diesel fuel. It is cheaper just to buy it at the gas station. Even if you want to be self sufficient there are to many chemicals that you would have to? buy to make your own diesel fuel. You are still dependent on the SYSTEM to make your own fuel. So, what's the point?
